Australia Council for the Arts set a clear brief for its new premises: to celebrate and showcase emerging local artistic talent. Interior2 was engaged to bring this vision to life in collaboration with Spitfire Control and design studio The World Is Round, resulting in a workplace that is both culturally expressive and highly functional.

Drawing inspiration from Indigenous themes, the design incorporates a rich and considered colour palette that establishes a strong sense of identity from the outset. Visitors are welcomed by a striking reception area, defined by sculptural ribbed wall panelling and an intricately detailed custom reception desk, setting the tone for the experience throughout the space.

The workplace has been carefully planned to support a variety of working styles. A diverse range of collaboration zones, quiet rooms, and breakout areas are thoughtfully distributed across the floorplate, creating a balanced environment that encourages both focus and interaction. A standout feature is the extensive custom joinery bookcase, which spans a significant portion of the office. Acting as a subtle room divider, it not only defines space but also serves as a curated library, showcasing a collection of local literary works and reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to Australian creativity.

Arguably the heart of the office is the kitchen and breakout area. Positioned to take full advantage of sweeping, panoramic views across Darling Harbour, Barangaroo, and toward North Sydney, this space provides a vibrant and inspiring setting for both staff and visiting artists. Designed as a multifunctional hub, it also doubles as an informal meeting zone, equipped with advanced video conferencing capabilities to support seamless communication and collaboration.
